Can I sand down and paint my textured black side mouldings, or would it be better/easier to buy a smoothed/primed set and just paint those?

81 rabbit has 180mm id brake drums on driver side and what appears to be large 200mm on passenger side.:confused: found a matching set of backing plates ( the larger size) now can't find drums that match. I tried 81 dasher/pickup drums...they won't work. any ideas?
