I just purchased a 2005 Volkswagen GTIMK4 1.8 liter Turbo 4 $200. It has over 200000 miles and currently does not run. Was it worth the purchase? And where do I even begin? But this as a project car but I have never worked on a vehicle before period just looking For some insight on where to start with getting it running again. I know that it can be a fun little car. Any help would be appreciated thanks

Those 1.8T are fun, peppy motors to have some fun with. The car looks to be in really good shape, did the previous owners tell you why it wouldn’t run?

It was his old college car he sold to a buddy years ago. When his friend hit a new car he gave it back with a misfire engine code and there was some slight black smoke coming from the engine. He replaced the head gasket and spark plugs and the misfire code went away but still black smoke. From what he can tell the rubber hoses to the engine have started to disintegrate and fall apart. He says it should start right up with a new battery and fixing the lines but I'm not sure. I bought the car not knowing anything about cars, but to learn and have a fun project car, but I don't even know where to start. Any tips?

Go to urotuning.com, they have good pricing on the hoses and everything you’ll need. I’d start with the easier stuff (belts,hoses,etc)

Also invest in a Bentley manual for your gen car, it’ll come in really handy
Yep, +1 to this!

Those Bentley service manuals seem expensive, until you find out what a shop will charge you to work on it!

Personally, I’d start by giving the whole car a good cleaning and vacuuming. Not a detailing job, just a good basic clean-up. For me at least, it makes it more enjoyable to work on.

How are you set for tools? And do you have knowledge of the basics, such as the four cycles of the engine (Power stroke, exhaust stroke, intake stroke, compression stroke?) Do you have access to a code reader, one that will read the codes specific to your car?

YouTube videos and your Bentley manual are both good (usually) sources. Some community colleges offer night courses in the basics .

Start by finding out if you can turn the engine over by hand usung a wrench or ratchet. Take out all spark plugs first and inspect those for condition and if oily or wet. Change the oil just to be sure no water has accumulated by sitting long time.

If engine turns over easily we can assume valve timing is ok.
Next check all rubber hoses. Especially vacuum lines.
At that mileage i would expect brittle and cracked.
Next is spark and voltage at specific points.

Listen to tank fuel inlet when ignition is turned to run (not start), should hear the pump build pressure. I have a manual that likely covers some of that car. I used to have a Jetta Mk 4 TDi
