I am a novice at working on beetles but wondered if anyone could help me understand why all the sudden gas is spitting out of the top of the air intake while running.:D:

Care to post a video or picture of where, or something?

IT could be the PCV system, but it's hard to tell with that picture, oh, right...

That's an old style oil-bath air-cleaner. Blue smoke means is oil burning somewhere.

You can covert to a new style dry system to narrow the problem to the engine or not.

They did their job in the day, but there is no reason for it anymore. See if you can find a K&N filter system that will fit inside the "bath" air cleaner to retain your look, or covert to a newer intake.

You can remove the big black kettle, and run the motor to see where the smoke is coming from. If you do not see any, then it is the oil bath system.

On the oil fill neck, disconnect the breather hose, check the oil level, if ok, start the engine. After a brief warm up, rev the engine to about 2500 RPM, if smoke is coming out of the breather, you got a burned piston or a problem with the rings.
