I don't know if this will help but I have a 2010 Tiguan Wolfsburg Ed. with the Aux and Bluetooth and I have never been able to play music through BT when paired. Calls are perfect but no music. The Aux connection works perfectly fine with various phones (HTC, IPhone) both streaming and stored on the phone.
You mentioned that yours is a 2008 model so I am assuming outside the US ? Depending on the phone you are using there might be a compatibility issue but the older phones should be backwards compatible although you are talking about up to a 10-11 year difference in tech. What is strange is the message you are getting. If you are just playing music with no video then this should not appear. Maybe try checking your cable that plugs into the AUX port to see if it is compatible.
