Hi All. I am new to the forum and to car restoration in general. However, I really want to get my dad's old 1960 beetle back on the road. Its current engine (1200 cc, 36 hp) does not work and is not original to the car. I am thinking of replacing rather than rebuilding. Should I upgrade to a bigger engine? Do you know of a good source for good replacements?
Thank you for the help!

If it isn’t in pristine original condition, a 1600 dual port would be fun. As long as we are spending your money, let's get a freeway flyer trans and convert to twelve volts.
One thing to check before 1600. The 12 volt flywheel is larger diameter and will probably rub on the tranny housing. Going from 6-12 volts is nice, be prepared to change 6volt motors (starter/wiper etc)and light bulbs to 12 volt. Get John Muirs manual and read it cover to cover. He has the best practical advice for air cooled VW. Very enjoyable reading
