So my 72 beetle when in gear idles high when I’m in first i will let off the gas to let it idle and it goes about 12 mph and I believe you are supposed to shift to second around 15 mph? It idles good not in gear it acts like first is like second gear I don’t know if I am just not getting something? Or that beetles are just like that i honestly have no idea lol. -Rob

Carb needs to be adjusted properly. Perhaps the power to the electric choke mechanism is missing so the fast idle cam on the drivers side is not letting the throttle close all the way.
When the timing is set correctly and the carb is adjusted correctly, and no vacuum leaks, the engine should idle a bit fast when cold then settle down to a low idle similar to any other 4 cylinder car.
