I recently bought a Westfalia with a jetta motor conversion. It is running really rough.

I need to identify what year motor I have.... Does anyone know where on the motor to look for some identifying marks?

Once I figure out the year I can start diagnosing the issues...

At present it will barely start, but once it's started seems to run OK. very low on power and rev's quite slowly. The vehicle had been sitting for a few years.

Ok, I noticed the engine code RV on the block. I did notice a circular code on the head but I couldn't read it very well . I think the RV engine code was used on the 87-92 golf/jetta.

Thanks for the information!! This is a bit of a mystery machine. Here is what I have determined so far...it originally was a 1982 VW Westfalia Diesel.. Converted at some point to a 1984 VW GTI. Then a newer MK2 motor block/heads were installed, keeping original diesel oil pan... and I think the 1984 CIS GTI Intake. I am not a VW genius, but I am pretty sure. Now... time to locate vacuum leaks and get this VW running correctly!!
