leak at injection pump

I have a good running diesel engine (1982) but the injection pump is leaking now where the cold start valve cable connection mounts. Can this seal be replaced without taking the pump apart? I have a complete rebuild kit for an injection pump, but I'd just like to replace the cold start valve seal if I can.

Yes I did it, it was a real pain to do on the car, and I had to be mindful....I suspect it really wasn't that hard...but it did leave me with a sore back and scraped hands.

Yes it can be done on the car but honestly for the sake of doing it better I would take it off. There is little room between the pump and engine and getting those nuts off the side might be outside your tool set. I think you can get one of those socket like wrenches in there but you will be fighting all the while you are doing it. And just drop something and it is in a very hard place to reach up past the radiator hoses.

Taking the nuts off the back, those that hold the pump on and setting up for a timing belt to me is less hassle. Maybe because I have done it so many times it is second nature.

I just don't like to fool with the pump on the engine much at all. Only for timing and fuel adjustment.
Best way to take the pump off the car and NOT have to fidget with timing afterwards would be to remove the passenger side engine mount bracket of which the pump attaches to (if you have that one). Will effectively be 1 piece. While you're at it...best replace the engine mount as well. Afterwards just bolt it back up...reset your TB and you're good.

Had to remove the pump on my Lemon Snowball to get to the top bolts for the WP housing and that's how I went about it.
