Unless you want to shoehorn in a small block aluminum V8, size and weight will really be a factor. The car will require a lot of body and suspension mods and probably not give you the HP you are looking for, without serious performance mod$$$. Probably end up with driveability problems, stopping problems as well as handling problems from the added front end weight.

Based on what I have seen with street driven new Beetles, turbocharging a V6 engine can give you 500hp to 600hp and survive some daily driving. You should upgrade the brakes to 12" Porsche rotors all around. There used to be a company in Canada that modified a standard new Beetle with a turbo V6, a 4 wheel drive transmission and 12" brakes, and imported it into the US. It was a great all around combination.
