I'm thinking about lowering the car by about an inch and was considering coilovers. Anyone has any suggestions on good coilovers (nothing overly expensive)? Anything else that needs to be adjusted when the car is lowered? I heard from my cousin that his friend lowered his car and there were some wheel alignment issues that needed fixing. Basically wore away his wheels on the inside because of the strut or what not. My other cousin does wheel alignments and has messed with the ride heigh of his 4x4 so he should know, just thought I'd ask since here people own the same car and I'm sure it differs from car to car.

if you only want an inch drop you can just get new springs, probably save you a bunch of money considering coils are $800+

not to thread hi-jack or anything, but if i were to get springs for the 1.5" drop with stock shocks/struts etc, am i going to be damaging my car?

Coils will, even at their highest setting, drop you more than 1". Go with springs for a 1"-2" drop. 1"-1.5" should be fine for a good while on stock struts, 2" will likely make them go in a year or so.

I wanted the same thing. I decided on the KW Variants. This is a pretty affordable coilover with the adjustability from .85"- 2.25" on the version 1s. You can find the Version ones for around $1000-$1200.

These are the only coilovers I found with a minimal drop on the highest setting. (only .85")

Also when you lower your car make sure to get an alignment. Any height adjustment to your car (even 1 inch) can throw your suspension geometry off. You also have to account for toe, caster, and of course camber when you lower your car.

The wheel may be straight after you lower your car but could be doing heavy damage to your tires if not re aligned. They also say wait a couple days to let the springs settle before you align them.

I went to the shop and had them aligned the day they were put on and took it back a week later and they re aligned it again. (For free.)

Good luck!

Dont forget about cup kits (a matched set of springs and struts). That is what I am planning on going with. I only want a 1-1.5inch drop on my bunny and have no need for coils. Getting the new springs and struts means they will work perfectly together and you will get much beter handling by also doing struts. Its kinda the midway option between springs only and coilovers.

That's what happened to my cousin's friend and he wasted 4 set of tires! Luckily they were the cheap chinese kind... yeah... he's a ricer.

The shocks are already set for lowered suspension... the car came 15mm lower than standard similar to the GTI. So maybe I won't need new struts.. dunno...

Kitty.. that is gruesome :(

On topic: If you only want a 1" drop go with a set of springs, or a cup kit for long-term reliability. If you go with the VW driver's gear springs (about a 1" drop) you will retain your factory suspension warranty.
