The issue is not what VW or, for that matter, any other manufactures says is normal UNLESS they disclose this characteristic to you prior to purchase. Without such a disclosure, the standard for any new vehicle is what any purchaser is entitled to expect. Automotive engineers without a bias state that a new vehicle should not require oil between manufacturer recommended change intervals. The underlying issue is the quality of design and the quality of manufacture. Oil burn is evidence that one or both are defective. The fact that some new engines burn while others of the same type do not suggests defects in manufacturing.
