Polo 1.4 Match 2014 rear lights too weak

Hello,

We recently bought a used Polo 1.4 Match DSG for my son and I was looking at the rear lights which seem to be very weak. I opened them up and realised they use a much smaller light bulb than the indicator, brake and reverse light bulbs, I think it is a H21W, but not sure. With the covers off, on both sides it is visibly very weak compared to the other bulbs.

I was wondering why they have decided to use such a weak light bulb of different size - or may be I need to replace with stronger ones ?

Edit: these are supposedly 21W just like all the others, in a smaller packaging, so there should be no difference in brightness, so maybe mine are different. I will replace them and see.

I think you need to replace the bulbs
In the end we discovered the previous owner had install a "dark" theme to the car, involving (amongst 100 other stupid changes) a dark film over the tail lights assembly so all rear lights, indicators, reverse, brakes, all appeared very dark, barely visible. I removed the rear lights housing and removed the film with the aid of a hair dryer.
