yes they do Wayne, but they can't take the grinding wheel in a angle grinder, off came the fan housing and the carb pipes.
44506

next in line was the left side pot cover.
44507

oh boy who did that? has that kitten been in here?
44508

off with the grill.
44509

a spray of WD40, wipe with a old rag, needs a proper clean out though.

next off, the rockers.
44512

44513

rockers marked for orientation with masking tape, the plugs in a numbered card, ready for examination.
the push rods out next.
44514

state of these, everything is coated with calcified oil. First one out.
44515

using a marked cardboard holder to show orientation of the rods, these are all hollow and drip oil, so a oil pan was needed.

this rusty old oil cooler will be off next. I wonder if it will be usable, replacements are £80. I'm hoping a clean up and new seals will do it.

today was epic in the moving forward stakes, the day started with the cylinder head coming off on the left side.
44525

messy but only a fin broken off the left forward pot
44526

the interior shows some blackening, but not enough to show up a consearn.
44527

the cylinder top surfaces are now exposed for inspection, no problems there, nice tight rings.

besides the cleaning up needed, everything looks to be reusable, I'm placing the parts in order, left to right, orientated as on the engine left to right.
44529

space on the right side of the table to take the right head & pots, first out comes the bellows after it's bracket is unbolted.
44530

ready to remove the right cylinder head and some assistance presented itself in thwe form of Daughter, Daughters boyfriend, Harry my son and me, four people can lift a beetle shell onto the beetle chassis.
44531

the holes all line up, hooray!, the only grip is I forgot to drill out the sheared off body location stud rear right, not a problem, this is just a test fit.

the body was easy to lift with four people, in fact so easy, using a length of timber at each end, we were able to fine tune it's position over the front and rear bolt holes, two in the front and two either side of the rear wheel arches.
44536

had to rush out and buy a new car cover to keep my new floor out of the weather.

great to see new and old amalgamated, if only temporarily.

44538

the main point, loads of space in the workshop to fix the motor.

44541

this image is giving me confidence, when you compare it to the first application of Gunk picture above.
44547

44548

next morning the engine had dried and looked reasonably clean, more work needed, but it's getting there.
44550

small areas around the bolts and studs need attention with a small screwdriver to scrape out guck that has held on. time to turn some attention to the jugs and heads.

this toothbrush has been of great assistance.
44552

Gunk works best if left to soak in and loosen the caked on grease and oil.

while that soaks in, time for some cleaning of the heads.
44554

Gunk helps here too, lots of white residue removed in a stroke.
44555

I'm no stranger to cleaning, this German pre war Barracks looks neat and tidy due to my attention with a bucket of soapy water and a scrubbing brush. 1981.
44556

the valve seats will need a thorough examination, once they've been cleaned.

out with the pressure washer this morning.
44570

the heads were nice and clean after a few hours soaking in Gunk.
44571

the heat exchanger was washed next.
44572

I'm keeping it together, but soon it will need to be divided, the left one looks usable.
Nice and solid.
44573

but the right side has had it, a mesh of rust holes marks it for the scrap pile.
