Stuck in Park - 2007 Automatic City Golf

Hi, my golf won't shift out of park. It is an automatic and doesn't appear to have an override. The usual brake, ignition, button doesn't allow the shifter to move. The solenoid makes a sound when the brake is depressed, while the car is running or key fully turned. I can't pull out the shift button. I need to get the shifter into neutral to remove the shift head and cover. Hoping someone has run into this problem before. I wish I could post a pic of the shifter. It's a simple vertical line of shifting options from park to 1st gear. Looks just like the 2001 Polo 6N2 variant, but for left side drivers.
