Ticking sound

Hi I’m wondering if any one can help please. I’m looking to buy a 2012 1.2 TDI Polo for my son as his first car. Does any one know what this part does? When I test drive the car the part circled red was making a strange ticking sound. Easy to fix / replace? Any help appreciated 🙏 thank you in advance.
