Winter Tire/Rim Recommendations for 2018 GTI Autobahn

I pick up my brand new 2018 GTI Autobahn on Friday, my first GTI, I’m so excited. But I want to get winter tires for them, and am looking for recommendations. Can I drop to a smaller wheel with a bigger profile winter tire, as long as the bolt pattern is still 5x112? Need to keep costs down. I live in Ontario, Canada. Thanks for the recommendations.

FaceBook market place!!!

I found a used Audi B5 S4 Avus 17” wheels for $150 USD & a Used Michelin XIce 225 45 17 for $300 USD.
And I’m very happy with them. (Although, I was ideally looking for 215 50 17. As the potholes here in NY are horrendous. )

And the transformation from 52lbs/wheel with the stock 18”s to 46lbs/ wheel with the 17” setup made the car a better Daily Driver.

I got a great set of 17” VW alloy rims with a new set of tires. The car looks so good with an actual VW rim on it, rather than a set of black steel rims.

I just bought a 2016 GTI Autobahn with only 16K, and a lot of aftermarket customizations, including *19" Niche Verona Wheels*

On my '05 Mini Cooper S, and on my '05 Subaru Legacy GT, the low-profile tires on both were pretty vulnerable to rim puncture when ice rocks and punctures.

Other than aesthetic appreciation, is there a reason I should sell the wheel/tire combo and buy robust 17" wheel/tire combos from TireRack.com ?
On a car this small, tire-roll on turns isn't particularly significant, right?
