Hello,

I've been looking at the Honda Civic Si and the GTI and after driving the GTI yesterday I'm certain that the GTI is the car I'd rather have (although they're both nice). However, my only hesitation is Volkswagen's reputation for poor reliability. All data I've seen indicates that through 2004 VW reliability has been poor and I've read enough posts online from 2006 GTI buyers who claim that their GTI had to be towed to the dealer multiple times in the 1st few months and even return the car under the lemon law that I'm now afraid to buy one.

Of course the dealer says that VW is now taking reliability seriously and that the kinks have been worked out in the 2007 cars, but I'm curious what owners of the 2007 GTI in the club think about this.

Thanks for any input - I'd love to hear something that makes me comfortable enough to buy a GTI!

WORD

I have a freind coming over today with his Honda. He wants to check out the Rabbit. So do I get any kudos for converting the guy? Come one VW, we bust our butts out there impressing the masses.

Dude, get a Honda if you're vane. Other than that, get off the cell, stop slickin' the hair back in the rear view mirrors, and shift it into gear and get something German.

I've never been a Honda hater. I love my vws and have even had a lemon vw and I'm still here. Every new car is going to have issues, and I think VW really steps up when something does break on these cars 90% of the time. A lot of things that will happen are common so they know how to deal with them. My situation was different, I was apparently the only person having the issues I was having, all the common fixes didn't help my case (on my mk4). i'm still here and have had no problems with the car. Get what you like based on performance, and overall feelings of the car. Not some report that you read. There are also Honda's out there that are not reliable...

I would own a Honda, I have friends that own hondas, I just personally love my vws.

What do you want?

This is not an easy answer because the current body style (mk5) has not been around long enough to determine how reliable it is. One aspect that the Rabbit has going for it is that it is being built in Germany. Historically, VW has had a great record of reliable vehicles being built there than Mexico. Though, I have seen some people state that the issues of poor vehicle quality from cars built in Mexico has been addressed.

What makes me a VW lover has more to do with the driving experience than the reliability. While I don't want a lemon, I find most other cars in this price range don't even come close to the driving experience. I want to tell you that the Rabbit will be reliable, but there is no data to back it up.

I know that VW has a bad reputation for reliability, but I have not seen it in my life. My grandma owns a 1984 Jetta, my mom a 1998 Bug, my brother a 2003 TDI Jetta wagon, and my partner a 2005 TDI Jetta. Outside of the general maintenance schedules, none of these cars have had to be in the shop.

Good luck in your decision making process.

Consider leasing

I have driven European and Japanese built cars over the last 20 years and while stationed in Germany and getting my doors blown off by numerous GTI's, I decided to get mine. Leased a 2007 Tornado Red 4 Door. I love driving this car! And to me thats what it's all about. I figure with the lease, if it spends too much time in the shop, in two years I'll turn it back in or keep it.
But at 500 miles, It's FAST...... and I'm lovin it!
