So, I installed all of my stuff this weekend. Here's a quick DIY for installing a head unit (AVIC D3), subwoofer, and amplifier. Hopefully this'll be good enough to get stickied! I used my cell phone for pics, so not the best quality. But it should be enough to figure out what I was doing.

You'll need a T20 and T15. To install, you'll also need a dash kit, wiring harness, antenna adapter, and a lot of butt splices and a few inline wire taps.

It would be Internet pollution if I posted how to get the dash off. We'll start with the trim removed.

EDIT: Here's a link to dash trim removal - http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2480895

Remove the radio:

Pull out the plugs from the back of the radio. The antenna has a little tab you have to pull out:
Image

The main harness has a "lunchbox handle" type of connector. Lift up on it and it'll pop out:
Image

Crimp what you can of the wiring harness. You can do the speaker wires (white/grey/purple/green with and without stripes). Also do ground and +12V. Don't do ACC, Antenna, Illumination. Here is a sample pic of the connected harness:
Image

Plug the harness in:
Image

When I got my antenna adapter, I saw the extra wire and I was like "what?". Turns out this is for the factory amplified antenna. Hook this wire to the antenna wire coming from the radio side of the harness:
Image

Next, we'll add the wires we need for the ACC power and illumination. Use an "add a circuit" type of thing for ACC power. Use fuse 41A (rear wiper fuse - on the bottom row of fuses, you should see 3. It's the one in the middle):
Image

For the illumination, tap the grey wire behind the headlight switch. To remove the switch, push in and twist clockwise. Disconnect the switch and pull back some of the insulation:
Image

To run the wires, we'll need to get rid of that pesky panel above the footwell. Four T15 screws and it'll fall down:
Image

Use an inline wire tap to attach a new wire to the grey one:
Image

Run the wire into the radio area. Crimp on to the add-a-circuit wire, and put that one into the radio area too. Now is also the time to run your Remote wire and RCAs for an amp, if you're installing one:
Image

To get them back to the rear of the car, just pull up on the trim panels and stick them under. It's important that you do this on the left side of the car, because the Power wire will be on the right. Again, this only applies if you're installing an amp.

For the GPS antenna, I put it on the dash. It came with a sticky pad sheet metal thing, for reception. I installed that right in front of the vent area:
Image

This picture shows where I ran my wires - it's fairly high up, beside the big plastic vent, right below the big white thing. When doing RCAs, it's roughly infinity times easier to push them through here than to pull them through the bottom. This is a pic of where I stuck my 3 RCA inputs for the unit (Video, Audio L/R input):

Plug your new wires in to the back of your radio:

Plug it in and test it (!) and then put your trim back:

Done!

Hey, sorry I didn't see your post before now.

You should have 2 harnesses - one with a bunch of colored wires, and one with some RCA plugs.

I screwed my dash kit directly onto the D3 - there was some plastic side support, but no cage (i.e. with bent tabs).

i dunno if you want i could post up my interior being torn up and everything for new door speakers....the whole process is rediculously hard. not for the everyday DIYer.

#32 ·
How much different would this install be with the 6-disc in-dash system that comes on the 4 door?

Would the same cage hold the D3?

Also, is the trim piece that goes around the finished unit something the I need to get also? Any difference with the 08's and 09's?

#33 ·
The 6-disc and single disc units are exactly alike, for the purposes of the install. Everything mounts the same, etc, just looks a bit different on the front.

You'll need to buy the dash kit, since it is specific to your car. 06-09 all use the same stuff, no differences.

Thanks for all your help so far. I have a few more questions after doing some looking around.

Would the install be fairly similar with the newer version of Pioneer's in-dash navigation? (AVIC-F700BT)

The names of the dash kits aren't as intuitive as I would've thought. I went to sonicelectronix.com but I'm not finding what I'm looking for. Can you offer any help in regards to that?

You mentioned needing T20 and T15 in your original DIY post. What are you referring to?

I'm trying to develop a 'shopping list' if you will, of all the things I'd need in order to do the install, but I'm thinking that being sorta new to this, there is going to be something I'll overlook. Is there something that could be easily overlooked by someone that has never done this type of install before?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

T15 and T20 are Torx screwdrivers, they look like star heads. I picked up a set of screwdrivers with T15, T20, and T25 since those are used all over the place in the car. These are sold at Auto Parts stores.

Installation should be fairly close with all aftermarket radios, but especially the Pioneer unit. Should be exactly the same.

Shoot an e-mail to the people at sonicelectronix, they'll help you out. I also wasn't sure of what the exact part numbers were - tell them you have an 07 Rabbit/GTI/Jetta (same stuff for all of them, makes it easier for them to look up).

The wire connectors are likely overlooked. You'll also need a crimping tool for them (it's a cheap tool). Don't forget to buy an extra fuse to put in the fuse tap, either :)

watch out which dash kit do you buy, because Metra it's not good finish wise.
I purchased the American International(AI) and it's pretty good. Scoche I heard it's OK too.
when you remove the upper vent cover above the radio and disconnect the airbag light connector, do not try turning the ignition on. you will have an error light in your instrument cluster. I removed the emergency switch and airbag light as an assembly out of the panel and this way I turned the ignition on to try my install.
I purchased everything from enfigcarstereo.com. I have seen on vwortex they have a coupon code also.
you will need an antenna adapter(ISO), I would suggest buying the amplified one. I didn't and I have a very short antenna(2.4") and I don't have the best radio reception.
I purchased the can-bus adapter too, just in case.

hey dj, i got a pioneer p4000 from sonic to as well as thae adpater they sent me. i'm new to car audio and just wanted to double check some thing. the wires on the Head unit plug and the wires on the adapter for the rabbit match up color for color or do i have to do a little guess work?

#38 ·
Should match up color for color - you'll have 3 brown wires on the connector that mates to the car, don't worry about them. May be labeled 'Mute'.

Don't connect the orange or red wire, those are ACC and ILL. Those may be labeled also.

alright one more question for you. what did you do with the ground wire. the plug that goes to the HU has 2 ground wires connected to a single bolt terminal did you just cut the terminal off and crimp both to the ground that mates to the car or bolt it off some where?

#42 ·
see i don't see it on your HU, possibility there is a difference between yours and mine since yours has navi and mine doesn't. basically on the right hand side of the plug there is two black wires i'm asuming are grounds that are crimped to basically a ring terminal thats open at the end so that it will slide onto a bolt. my friend told me that i can most likely bolt it to some thing up in the dash to ground but if its better i could cut and strip the wires and crimp them to the black wire on the harnes that mates to the car.

#43 ·
I would say either way is fine. The ground in the harness probably bolts to the chassis ground somewhere anyways. So, I'd say either way will work, depends which you'd prefer to do.

Now that you mention it, I think I did have a wire like that - I believe I tapped it to the harness.

Ok I have to say this guide was quite helpful. I just installed that same stereo (or similar) tonight. However I go to test it out and there's nothing. I get out my meter and all the way back to the harness there's no power. I looked at all the fuses and they seem alright. Oh and of course the old stereo doesn't work anymore either.

Am I missing something obvious here? I think I may have made a little spark at one point so that's why I initially thought it would be a fuse.

Also I've never tried installing a stereo before.

#47 ·
Yeah I should have stopped there and figured out what happened. But I'm pretty sure the fuse is ok. I think I even switched it out with another fuse... So unless my radio AND heated seats aren't working tomorrow...

I'll stop by the dealer tomorrow so they can tell me how much of an idiot I am.

#50 ·
Ok well I'm dumb. My coworker found the blown fuse that I had missed. My windshield wipers weren't working either so I knew something was up.

Anyways I used the PAC harness and the install was incredibly easy. I'm glad I did because I really didn't want to have to worry about the reverse signal especially. My dash is a little different though, it took me a few minutes to figure out the little rubber bit at the top comes out to reveal two screws.

The install places wanted to buy the PAC harness and everything else for nearly $200, plus $80/hour for labour. I'm glad I did it myself, it only took me a few hours.

#53 ·
The purpose of the harness is to make a plug that plugs in to your car on one end, and into the radio on the other end. No removal of any wires. You're just making a plug for the radio to match your car.

I can't watch cable TV or anything, but I can watch DVDs. I also have 3 RCA jacks for whatever input I'd like.

The RCAs I ran through my car were just for the rear sub. If you're not installing a sub, it's entirely plug and play. Make the adapter to go from your radio to plug in to your car, use the PAC adapter or run those two extra wires, and you're done.

Ok just curious. I grounded the parking brake wire, and I can watch stuff off my iPod when the cars not moving. However everytime I start up it tells me the parking brake was hooked up incorrectly, and if I go faster than maybe 10km/h the video turns off. Did I do this really wrong or does it know I didn't hook it up just because it can tell how fast the car is moving from the GPS?

Also that video input thing is awesome. Nice work.
