Torque Converter - 2011 Tiguan SE 6-speed Auto Transmission jerking at complete stop

Ever since we purchased our 2011 Tiguan SE, the transmission has occassionally created a jerking sensation at complete stop. Two trips to the dealer and they couldn't duplicate the problem. After my second visit, I drove around the dealership until I figured out how to duplicate the problem consistently. Apparently, if I brake to a complete stop, then press down on the brake some more, the car will lunge jerk a second or two later. I was able to demonstrate this behavior with the mechanic in the car. Keep in mind, this is not from letting the car creep and braking again causing the car to jerk and it also isn't inertia. Sometimes 10-15 seconds after a complete stop, such as waiting at a stop light.

The mechanic says it's the transmission torque converter. It apparently relieves the pressure from the transmission. He claimed a representative from the Michigan office visited the dealership in the past to explain the functionality of this converter, because one other Tiguan owner complained of the same problem. The mechanic confirmed that more immediate stopping may trigger more dramatic jerking of the car, which is what I was experiencing. I was told if the jerking got worse, then a real problem persists and to bring it back. I tested a 4WD Tiguan before purchasing the 2WD and didn't feel the jerking. The mechanic says the 4WD has different transmission.

I believe the dealership is being honest but I find this behavior very strange for a transmission built in 2011. I've owned many cars and I've never experienced a transmission behave this way. Everything with the Tiguan has been great, but it's quite annoying when driving. Maybe someone with more car knowledge or another Tiguan owner can confirm this sounds like a reasonable explanation for what I'm experiencing.

Btw, I have a 2011 Tiguan SE(two wheel drive) and I'm in California, USA. Car is now at 9500 miles. The jerking has not gotten better or worse. The mechanic was very friendly and took 5-10 minutes to speak with me about the problem. But it's still hard to believe a new transmission would behave in such a way. I feel like going to a dealership and test driving another 2WD Tiguan to confirm this is a normal occurrence. Thanks for any feedback in advance.

The 4motion Tig's Haldex system does an "extra" change (that's what it feel like) as you stop and at about 15kph when moving off, it's going from a 50/50 front/rear torque split (it goes into this for starting off to prevent wheel spin and slip) and 90/10 front/rear which is its normal cruising mode. In the case of the OP he has a 2WD which does not have the Haldex unit anyway so it can't be that !!

Cheers

Certainly don't feel that in my 4motion, the only thing you get if you ease off the brake too far it starts to creep forward, but that's expected. Do you have auto-hold on or off ? (personally I don't use auto-hold at all, but I think some of the later NA models had it switched on as the default setting).

Cheers

Just bought a 2WD Tiguan and noticed the same jerking after lifting off the brake, with Auto Hold off, after siting at a light for a few minutes. I have worked on VW's for many years as a professional and a shade tree mechanic. I asked the dealer if this was normal and was told yes this is normal. My theory is this is a fuel saving feature, the torque converter disengauges to reduce load on the engine while siting. Like it or not this seems to be the answer.

I have a 2011 Tiguan that I bought in Jan 2011. It was the first new car I had ever purchased. My husband and I prefer certified used but sadly no used Tiguans were available. I picked up the car new with 69 miles. It has been to the shop 6 times in the last 14 months and I continued to complain about the issue you describe here. It is worse when wet and above 40 degrees. My car now has 30k on it and I am just finding out that the torque is the issue. The dealer called me earlier this week to tell me it was a pressure release valve in the transmission and VW approved the warranty work. This morning I got a call that the regional VW QC rep said not to do the repair and that this was normal. What I would like to know is why did VW not say that this was "normal" 30k miles ago, why did my techs not know, and why was this not disclosed at point of purchase? I stop 50-100 times a day and every time I feel like a car is tapping me from behind when. Annoying to put it mildly. Had I known I may not have purchased this particular VW or perhaps would have traded it in before I put 30000 miles on it. I am waiting to here back from the regional but if they can not fix this to my liking and tell me one more time that this is normal I will be pursuing some sort of legal action to get this rectified. Did you get any resolve or fix to this?

Does anyone else think that this is ridiculous? We are paying good money for a Tiguan that does not operate at standards that I have come to expect from a VW. I currently own a 2010 VR GTI and my first ever brand new vehicle purchase, a 2011 Tiguan FWD. I picked my Tiguan up with 69 miles on it and have had it in at least 6 times in the last 14 months. I drive a lot and put 30,000 miles on it but I have been complaining about this "feeling bumped from behind sensation" when fully stopped for the entire 14 months. My tech finally diagnosed it with the help of VW just this week. They were set to replace a pressure release valve in the transmission but have now declined and stated that this is "normal." They are denying payment to the dealer and the dealer claims that this is the first that VW has told them of this issue so that was why they were unable to tell me earlier. This "normal" occurrence was not disclosed at point of purchase, or anytime I brought it in to address the issue. I drive so much that I am experiencing this "jerking" sensation at least 50 times a day. If it is raining or wet it is a more intense "jerk." Had I known this I would have decided on another VW not the Tiguan or I would have traded this one in before adding the excessive mileage. I am awaiting a call back from a VW regional but if this were any other product that performed in such a way with no ability to fix it I would return it. Why should we have to deal with this issue on a car that costs more than some people's rent per month? This is not the service or quality I have come to expect from VW. We should ban together and demand a fix to this problem.

I'm up to 17k miles now. Lunging not as noticeable but still occurs. Still blows me away that a transmission from a car manufactured in 2011 would behave this way. Everything about this car is better than other cars in its class but the transmission is horrible. We are 50/50 whether we're gonna sell this car when we can break even.

25,000km here, 2011 tiguan 4motion.

Similar issue. But mine is intermittent. the "bump from rear" sensation happens more consistently if I have gone through rush hour traffic. The bump comes after a minute or so of stopping at the red light. I did notice the engine vibration prior to the bump is a tad more than after the bump occurs. Its like as if the tranmission shifted to neutral or something like that after being stopped for a minute or so.

Still happens but less frequent. Now at 34k. Not sure if it's because transmission is "breaking in" or I've learned how to break in this car without getting the "jerking".

On a side note, my main fan went out at 25k. Didnt discover the issue until my car was overheating with the AC on during hot summer day. Fan was louder than usual for last 9 months because it was the secondary fan working overtime. It would continually go on while driving but was most apparent after turning off engine. Dealer ignored my complaints of loud fan at 30k maintenance because no check engine light. They replaced the fan at 34k and claim the secondary fan tested at 100%. Hard to believe there was no wear and tear on a secondary fan that worked overtime last 9 months.

Hi folks, great descriptions and comments. Thank you all so much; this is a very useful forum and it's because of you guys.
Question: Does my 2013 Comfortline 6-spd auto with 4 Motion actually have an Auto-Hold function that is settable? I have no button that I'm aware of. Is the autohold feature for the manual tranny only, and the automatic tranny has it automagically? Just curious, because I experience the same bumping sensation (freaky at first).
