Ever since we purchased our 2011 Tiguan SE, the transmission has occassionally created a jerking sensation at complete stop. Two trips to the dealer and they couldn't duplicate the problem. After my second visit, I drove around the dealership until I figured out how to duplicate the problem consistently. Apparently, if I brake to a complete stop, then press down on the brake some more, the car will lunge jerk a second or two later. I was able to demonstrate this behavior with the mechanic in the car. Keep in mind, this is not from letting the car creep and braking again causing the car to jerk and it also isn't inertia. Sometimes 10-15 seconds after a complete stop, such as waiting at a stop light.
The mechanic says it's the transmission torque converter. It apparently relieves the pressure from the transmission. He claimed a representative from the Michigan office visited the dealership in the past to explain the functionality of this converter, because one other Tiguan owner complained of the same problem. The mechanic confirmed that more immediate stopping may trigger more dramatic jerking of the car, which is what I was experiencing. I was told if the jerking got worse, then a real problem persists and to bring it back. I tested a 4WD Tiguan before purchasing the 2WD and didn't feel the jerking. The mechanic says the 4WD has different transmission.
I believe the dealership is being honest but I find this behavior very strange for a transmission built in 2011. I've owned many cars and I've never experienced a transmission behave this way. Everything with the Tiguan has been great, but it's quite annoying when driving. Maybe someone with more car knowledge or another Tiguan owner can confirm this sounds like a reasonable explanation for what I'm experiencing.
Btw, I have a 2011 Tiguan SE(two wheel drive) and I'm in California, USA. Car is now at 9500 miles. The jerking has not gotten better or worse. The mechanic was very friendly and took 5-10 minutes to speak with me about the problem. But it's still hard to believe a new transmission would behave in such a way. I feel like going to a dealership and test driving another 2WD Tiguan to confirm this is a normal occurrence. Thanks for any feedback in advance.
