It's the piston rings that are the problem in the 1.2 and the 1.4 TSI.

The specific problem is, part of the piston between the rings crack and
then come away, damaging the piston rings and eating into the cylinder bores. It was
finally admitted in late 2011 that there was a problem leading to engine
failure. SEAT offered customers new piston rings. However, they were installing
completely new pistons. It was VW trying to delude the consumer that there was
a minor piston ring production problem, rather than saying that it was a major
piston design flaw.

Revised pistons were used in the 2012 and up models and were standard in the
CTHE/CTHF engine codes. However it happened in 2014 with the 1.2 SEAT
Leon. 2012 in the Touran 1.2s. Basically, it's a 1.2 engine issue, and
I would stay away from them.

Fuel consumption goes way up, and it will burn more oil as the damage
continues. There is no reason these should fail under normal driving
conditions. So, it has to be a major design flaw.
