So, I installed all of my stuff this weekend. Here's a quick DIY for installing a head unit (AVIC D3), subwoofer, and amplifier. Hopefully this'll be good enough to get stickied! I used my cell phone for pics, so not the best quality. But it should be enough to figure out what I was doing.

You'll need a T20 and T15. To install, you'll also need a dash kit, wiring harness, antenna adapter, and a lot of butt splices and a few inline wire taps.

It would be Internet pollution if I posted how to get the dash off. We'll start with the trim removed.

EDIT: Here's a link to dash trim removal - http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2480895

Remove the radio:

Pull out the plugs from the back of the radio. The antenna has a little tab you have to pull out:
Image

The main harness has a "lunchbox handle" type of connector. Lift up on it and it'll pop out:
Image

Crimp what you can of the wiring harness. You can do the speaker wires (white/grey/purple/green with and without stripes). Also do ground and +12V. Don't do ACC, Antenna, Illumination. Here is a sample pic of the connected harness:
Image

Plug the harness in:
Image

When I got my antenna adapter, I saw the extra wire and I was like "what?". Turns out this is for the factory amplified antenna. Hook this wire to the antenna wire coming from the radio side of the harness:
Image

Next, we'll add the wires we need for the ACC power and illumination. Use an "add a circuit" type of thing for ACC power. Use fuse 41A (rear wiper fuse - on the bottom row of fuses, you should see 3. It's the one in the middle):
Image

For the illumination, tap the grey wire behind the headlight switch. To remove the switch, push in and twist clockwise. Disconnect the switch and pull back some of the insulation:
Image

To run the wires, we'll need to get rid of that pesky panel above the footwell. Four T15 screws and it'll fall down:
Image

Use an inline wire tap to attach a new wire to the grey one:
Image

Run the wire into the radio area. Crimp on to the add-a-circuit wire, and put that one into the radio area too. Now is also the time to run your Remote wire and RCAs for an amp, if you're installing one:
Image

To get them back to the rear of the car, just pull up on the trim panels and stick them under. It's important that you do this on the left side of the car, because the Power wire will be on the right. Again, this only applies if you're installing an amp.

For the GPS antenna, I put it on the dash. It came with a sticky pad sheet metal thing, for reception. I installed that right in front of the vent area:
Image

This picture shows where I ran my wires - it's fairly high up, beside the big plastic vent, right below the big white thing. When doing RCAs, it's roughly infinity times easier to push them through here than to pull them through the bottom. This is a pic of where I stuck my 3 RCA inputs for the unit (Video, Audio L/R input):

Plug your new wires in to the back of your radio:

Plug it in and test it (!) and then put your trim back:

Done!

For installing an amp, you'll also need to run a power wire directly from the battery.

The grommet I used is on the passenger side. That's why you need to run the RCAs down the drivers side. Here is a picture of the grommet I used. You may have to peel back weatherstripping and move a little plastic tray, but its a very very easy one to get to:
Image

The plug will look like an alien antenna:
Image

Pull it out, cut off the top and put it around your wire:
Image

Use a coat hanger to get into your interior (there is some soft foam in the way, poke right through it). I pulled back a little more trim than was needed because I'm an idiot and didn't see that the hanger was through (it went through so far that it got caught on something and was bending). Here's where it came down:
Image

I attached the wire directly to the battery. BE SURE YOU HAVE AN INLINE FUSEHOLDER AND THAT THERE IS NO FUSE IN PLACE. I removed the nut, dropped it into the engine bay, thanked the VW engineers for making it so open, retrieved the nut, and stuck it on. 10mm nut, BTW.
Image

That's it. Secure the wire away from the engine block, and don't install the fuse until you've got everything set.
Image

Run the 12v wire to the back of the car the same way you did with the remote/RCA wires. Just pull up the trim, that's all there is to it. Plug the RCAs, remote wire, 12V Power and speakers into your amplifier. Find a place to ground a wire (you can use the seatbelt bolt, or do what I did). I used the T20 screw that was holding the trim in place. Note that the screw connects to a PLASTIC piece, so rough up the paint and expose bare metal all around. Use a big washer around the screw, and clamp it down. Here's a picture of my final install:
Image

I've gotta hide that ground wire a bit better, but it's alright. Sounds freakin awesome.

Hope this helps someone

yep. it helped me this morning. thanks.

i ran some 6 awg thhn wire this morning to the hatch area this morning.

also, if your power wire is thinner, you can cut this grommet a little cleaner to get a tighter fit.

is this because of space constraints or interference reasons?

If you didn't cut your top vent yet to run the GPS antenna, I put mine to the right of the vent, inside the dash. I put the sticky magnetic tap on a plastic piece underneath the outer skin of the dash, and set the antenna right there. I get great reception, and it is completely hidden. As long as you don't block the antenna with metal, it works great. great install, looks fantastic. I did mine similar, but I used the pac adapter that gives you acc, all the nav wires, and illumination from the CAN-Bus. Made the nav hookup so much easier.

I really considered installing it on the inside - I prefer to have it visible to the outside though. I thought about using the PAC adapter, but for me it wasn't worth it to pay $60-75 for a connector when I can just run a couple of extra wires myself. I don't mind tearing into stuff though, so it could just be me :).

Thanks for the compliments ;)

Well, I didn't blow anything up ;)

It's a really sweet unit. I bypassed the parking brake pretty easily (mod info on AVIC411) - basically, you move the yellow/black "Mute" into a different position on the harness (one spot "above" it), then ground that wire and the parking brake wire.

Stereo installs are usually my stronger point :)

I was thinking doing it your way, but when I heard people complaining after a dealer visit, that the dealer required the original radio in the dash to scan the car, then I changed my mind. ;)

Well, I had three spare wires they labeled "Mute", all brown. I'm guessing those are the CAN wires. I'd probably give my dealership a bit of a hassle if they demanded my radio be in place - I guess it can justify buying VAGCOM though, right? :)

Nitro, any input on this? Ever scan a car where the owner hasn't left in his $50 stock radio?

Anyone have any luck changing out the speakers in this badboy?
Crutchfield only shows up 4 inch speakers. But what if I get a spacer and take out the bass driver. Would I be able to fit a 6 1/2 in there? I know people say not to change the speakers, but I'm adding 2 amps / headunit / sub and want some nice components up front. What about the rears crutchfield shows the size as being 6 3/4. I have a 4 door, 6 disc radio, AUX in the glovebox.

Just an update on the dealer scanning radio situation. I went in for my 5k service, my service manager said "Nice radio!"

That's it. That's all I heard. No scanning tools got blown up, no error codes made them hold my car. So kids, do eeeet.

radio ACC cable

so the day after i bought my rabbit i installed a flip out jensen head unit wiring only to the harness... it was such a pita every time i turned off the car to have to sit there and turn the radio off manually...(well not really a pita, more of a nucence...) eventually i just ran the acc wire to the cigerette lighter fuse location... i wish i found out about this first..

also, about the AVICD3 pioneer, i want to buy one so bad (they're down to like 600 at my local bestbuy) but i hear that in order to use the navigation, u have to take out the cd/dvd if ur listening to one, put in a navi-dvd etc.etc. isnt that annoying? i like the way that that headunit's illumination could match perfectly the interior colors of the rabbit though..

theres a new similiar pioneer i think its the avic-f700bt or something like that.i might consider that one instead...

any suggestions? btw, what is a "pac adapter"?

I'm looking into the AVIC-Z2. It looks really sweet, and it has the ability to listen to a CD or an MP3 and listen to your Navigation too, there's a 30GB hard drive in it. So even with 10GB left after all the Navigation software, you can still fit a lot of songs on your hard drive.

Oh, and I've never owned anything but Pioneer. Infact, I've had the same head unit in 3 of my cars, now its time to retire it. :D

in the new units with usb plug, you can connect big hardrives if you want:) ;), it's not necessary to have everything in the internal hardrive

I'm not too familiar with the satellite set up. The receiver was under my passenger seat in the GTI. That's about all I know. I also don't have any info on the iPod connection, but I recall there being something on vortex about it.

K, I just bought my D3... last one in the store and it was their demo so I don't think I got everything I need. I don't think I have any of the wiring harnesses that you guys were talking about and I didn't notice, but did you use a cage in your install DJ? If so, is the one on the Pioneer one going to fit?
I need to know if I've got everything cause I'd rather have this thing in my car than sitting on my floor :(
