I purchased a 2003 Jetta a few months ago and noticed that sometimes the engine revs high on startup. I've heard that this issue is normal and actually part of the "cold start program." Here's where it gets weird. The engine does not return to idle speed (around 1000 rpm) after a few seconds like it is supposed to and rather takes around 3-4 minutes if at all. When this occurs the engine will continue to rev high (slowly climbing to around 2000 rpm) when the clutch is depressed. My wife and I have noticed that this normally happens after short trips of less than 15 miles. We live in southern GA so I wouldn't think the "cold start programming" would even take effect, especially with the recent temperatures. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be going on?
